GDPR

Help Article 1

This guide is an introduction to the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You need to make sure that your website is compliant with data protection laws, which govern how you collect and process personal information.

Important

As stated in our Terms & Conditions, it is your responsibility to ensure that your website abides by any local laws. Any information contained within this article is not legal advice and you should not rely upon it as such. GDPR can require several actions from site-owners, depending on how you plan to use site-visitors’ data. If you are uncertain about your responsibilities, please seek legal advice from an expert.

Privacy Policies

As part of GDPR, you must let your site visitors know how you collect, store and use their data. A privacy policy is a statement that discloses the way in which your website gathers and uses personal data.

We can’t create your privacy policy for you and you may wish to seek legal advice on what yours should contain. However, as a starting point, you can:

Understanding Data Usage

Third-party services that you use to operate your website will also collect personal information about your site visitors. They will have their own policies that detail how they collect, store and use this information. You should make sure you are aware of what data is being used and by who.

Whilst it is your responsibility to make sure that understand (and agree to) how third parties use your customer data, BC Website Design may be able to provide a list of third-party suppliers that we set up on your site, with your permission.

We may be unable to provide a complete list of third-party suppliers related to your site.

Cookies

GDPR also requires that you obtain consent from site visitors before placing non-essential cookies on their devices. It may not be possible to use only essential cookies, so the best way to obtain consent is to use a popup banner, asking users for consent.

GDPR Requests

Under GDPR, your customers can request to see a copy of their data and/or delete some or all of the data you store.

Although BC Website Design can help retrieve / delete some data, please note that it is your responsibility to be GDPR compliant. BC Website Design may be able to help:

  • Retrieve / delete customer data
  • Provide a list of third party apps and services on your website.
